Local know-how
Working with Charlotte's red clay
Much of Charlotte sits on dense red clay. It holds water in winter, bakes hard in summer and makes it tough for new plants to root. We loosen and amend beds with compost before planting, and we choose plants that handle clay and Charlotte's hot, humid summers.
Many Charlotte lawns are tall fescue, a cool-season grass that does best when it's aerated and overseeded in early fall. If your lawn thins out every summer, that's usually where we start.
